Kyoto walk 伏見稲荷と狐

伏見稲荷は映画Sayuri の舞台になってからますます神秘的な千本鳥居が、海外メディアどもとりあげられ、今では京都で最も人気な観光地の１つ。

Fushimi-inari is one of the most popular touristy spots in Kyoto. This thousands of Torino-gates are so mysterious and catch people's hearts.

稲荷神社は名前の通り、稲荷大神を祀っていてもともとは稲がなる、豊穣を願う神社だったそう。狐が神様のお使いなのは、狐の色や尻尾の形がたわわに実った稲に似ているからなんだとか。でも普通の狐ではなくて、神様のお使いだから白狐、白い（目に見えない）特別な狐なんだって。

Inari shrines are literally for Inari-gods and the origin is "ine=rice ga naru=grown". Foxes are their messengers and often seen in inari shrine. It's also because the yellowish color of fox and the shape of its tail remind people of well grown rice. It's said that those foxes are not normal one but "byakko" a special white fox which we human being cannot see. 

もともと豊穣を願う稲荷神社が産業全般の神様として広がっていったのは江戸時代。あまりにもたくさんできたから流行り神社なんて呼び名も。おいなりさん（稲荷寿司）が広まったのもこの時代。狐は油揚げたべるのかしら？

それから、この鳥居の朱色には、魔除けの意味があって、「願いが通る」から今では1万基以上ある。

In Edo era, people spread inari shrines as the god of business in general. Too many inari shrines were built and it's called even as "infectiou-shrine" . At the same period  "oinarisan",(sushi with fried tofu skin) became popular. I wonder do foxes really eat fried tofu though...

The red color of gates have the power of protection from bad lucks. There are more than 10000 gates with the meaning of "negai=wish ga toru=go through". 

まさに観光地だけど、伏見の眺めはそれでもいく価値が十分あると思う場所。

I know it's too touristy but believe it or not the view from the fushimi mountain is worth visiting.
