帝釈天 Taishakuten Curving techniques

柴又、帝釈天には法華経の逸話に沿った10枚の木彫がある。

Taishakuten, Shibamata Tokyo. There are 10 masterpieces of wooden curving which are based on Hokekyo, Buddhism stories. 

帝釈堂を囲む壁には、上から十二支図、天人図、法華経の逸話に基づく10枚、花鳥図と1番下に亀が彫られている。大正後期、昭和初期に着工され、10人の彫り師により作られている。

In the upper walls, there are 12 Chinese zodiacs. In the middle walls, there are 10 curving masterpieces based on Buddhist story. Then below the walls, there are birds and at the bottom there are turtles. 

An artist Kato Toranosuke made the first curving masterpiece in Taisho 11. Then he asked other 9 artists living in Tokyo to create the rest of 9 pieces. They had to gone trough the great Kanto earthquake and lost wood materials. It took few years to get started on creating those walls.
