熊手 Kumade

柴又の高木屋さんの軒先でかわいい熊手を発見！

もともとは庭掃除で使う熊手から「運をかっこむ」、「福を掃き込む」として商売繁盛を祈願して飾られるようになったそう。

Look! At the entrance of Takagi-ya*(check out #Tora-san), I found a cute Kumade. Kumade is "rake" to clean up fallen leaves. It's like a word game but people started to say 運(luck)をかっこむ(bring in),福(fortune)を掃き込む(sweep up), it became a lucky charm for successful business.

この熊手、酉の市で縁起物として売られるようになった歴史は江戸時代から。旧葛西花又村、現在の東京都足立区花畑町の鷲大明神に鶏を奉納する収穫祭が起源と言われいて現在は関東を中心に鷲神社の年中行事として行われる酉の市。

"Tori no ichi" has started from Edo era (1600's~). It's said the origin was the harvest festival of Washi (eagles) daimyo-jin(great god) in Hanamata, Tokyo (currently Adachi-ku, Tokyo). Now a days "Tori no ichi" became annual event of many other Washi (eagle) jinjas (Shrines) in Kanto-district (incl. Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Gunma, Tochigi, Ibaraki and Chiba prefectures).

今年の酉の市は、11月11日と23日の2回。実はこのお祭り何故か浜松でも行われていて小さい頃から知っていました。私の両親が贔屓にしているレストランに熊手をプレゼントしていたことがあって、てっきり日本の全国的な行事なのかと・・・徳川家康が駿河で行っていた伝統行事が江戸幕府とともに広がったっていう説があるみたいです。おもしろい！

"Tori no ichi" will be held on 11th Nov, and 23rd Nov this year. Actually I knew this festival since when i was a little kid as we have this festival at Daian-ji 大安寺 in Hamamatsu (cozy town in Shizuoka prefecture) as well. My parents buy Kumade for their favorite restaurants and I thought it's Japanese common event until today. Interesting story is, Tokugawa Ieyasu (The first shogun of the Tokugawa. Tokugawa family ruled Japan from 1600 to Meiji Restoration 1868) did this event in this area before he moved into Edo, (Tokyo) and it widely spread.
