てぬぐいは33cm×90cmの布。てぬぐいの端は切れっぱなし。もともと反物で好きな長さ購入できたから。それと、縫っていないから雑菌の繁殖が少ないし、乾きやすい。漢字だと手拭いだから、もともとは”手を拭う”ものだったのかしら？

Have you ever heard about Tenugui? It's one of Japanese traditional fabrics. It's like a tea towel, 33cm×90cm size. The edges are not blind stitched. Tenugui dries quickly and hygiene because of this edge. Guessing from the name of Kanji "手(hands)拭い(to wipe)"I wondered its origin was towels??

実はルーツは奈良時代の神事の際の装身具で、広く庶民に使われるようになったのは江戸。綿の流通とともに広がったみたい。

It's said that the root is in Nara era (710-794), people used only for religious services (神道Shinto ritual) as cotton was not a common fabric yet. From Edo (1603-1868) people started using Tenugui widely.
